"Here is where the Geeva kidnapping story originated," Zanfield handed a comp-vid to me. I'd brought everything from my study aboard XIII, including the massive desk, and still had room for shelves, furniture, books and plants.

"Miz sent the information after tracking it down," Zanfield added, taking stock of all the empty space around us. "I hear plants are good for helping freshen the air," he added.

"I was thinking about that," I said. "Any suggestions?"

"We'll have to add sunlamps or grow lamps," he tapped his chin while frowning at several spaces in corners and such.

"Easy enough to do."

"Right. Something tall and leafy there," he pointed to the largest space. "Maybe something short but full next to it. Then, maybe one of those delicate, flowering things on a table next to a comfy chair over here," he pointed in another direction. "Perri and I can do some research. She likes plants. Had one in college but had to give it away when she graduated. She called it Esmeralda."

"She named her plant?"

"Esmeralda deserves the utmost respect," Zanfield held up a hand. "We still don't know if she survived the move and transition."

"Look, if you can locate Esmeralda, then bring her here for Perri," I said. "And ask her to find other plants for my office, all of whom she is welcome to name."

"I'll get to work on it right away."

"You do that."

As Zanfield left my study, Travis and Trent walked in. "We may have a line on some of the petty criminals the Prophet may have taken over," Travis said. "Trent and I couldn't sleep last night, so we started pegging thefts of food and the like—the Prophet still has to feed his people."

"Go on."

"There've been a rash of raids on canning and processing plants—the kind that are situated right next to the fields where vegetables or livestock are grown," Travis explained. "Many of them have reported shipments that have disappeared, with very little evidence to go on."

"It may be nothing," Trent shrugged. "But even the Prophet has to eat. Plus, we haven't heard of ships being pirated lately—I believe we broke him of that habit by destroying his fleet and preventing him from getting more ships."

"It's worth checking out. Make a list of all the processing plants in question and ask Barry and George to find out what they can through comp-sleuthing. If they find anything that warrants investigation, we'll go in person to look into it."

Travis and Trent fist-bumped, then strode out of my office in a hurry. They wanted their efforts to pay off; I could see it quite plainly—as if they'd shouldered some of the blame for Sabrina's mistakes.

What happened in Campiaa City isn't your fault, I sent to them. But your reasoning is quite sound in this, I believe. The Prophet doesn't want to risk his key people just to steal food, so he'll let someone else who doesn't matter so much do all the work.

Our thinking exactly, and thank you for having confidence in us, Travis replied.

Cassie, Rajeon, Denevik, I sent.
